AL-Haidariya Shrine at Najaf

Najaf, which is 161 Km far from Baghdad, is a name dear to the hearts of many moslems all over the world. It has been and is still a school of Islamic sciences, jurisprudence and literature. Its holy soil embraces the body of Imam Ali bin Abi Talib, the prophit mohamad's cousin and son-in-law. Historians say that the tomb of Imam Ali was first discovered around 750 A.D. (139 A.H.) by Dawood Bin Ali AL-Abbas. The golden dome of AL-Haydariya shrine is made of 7.777 tiles of pure gold. The two golden minarets are 35 meters high and each of them is made of 40.000 gold tiles.
 
Al-Husseiniya shrine in Kerbela

Kerbela, the city of martyrdom and sacrifice, is 102 Km far from Baghdad. It has a special position in the hearts of the moslems. Their eyes and minds are directed towards it from thousands of miles. On its soil the father of all martyrs, Imam Hussein Kerbela, the city of martyrdom and sacrifice, is 102 Km far from Baghdad. It has bin Ali bin Abi Talib met martyrdom on the tenth of Moharam in 680 A.D. (61 A.H.) in the famous and historic Al-Taf Battle. His tomb is in the sacred soil of Kerbela.According to historical sources, the first building to embrace the tomb goes back to the year 685 A.D. (65 A.H.). About two centuries later, the Abbasid Caliph AL- Muntasir Billah 861 A.D. (247 A.H) rebuilt the tomb and in fifth century A.H., AL-Hasan bin AL-Fadhil built a fence around it.AL-Husseiniya shrine consists of the yard, the cloister, the gallery, and the interior shrine, where in its center the holy tomb is situated. AL-Husseinya shrine is one of the most magnificent holy shrines in Iraq. The Iraqi builder and architect have really excelled in the construction of this shrine which is one of the Islamic architecture's wonders.

 

 
AL-Abbassiya Shrine in Kerbela

Kerbela, the city of martyrdom and sacrifice is distinguished among other Iraqi cities by the two holy and separate shrines, which it embraces. These are the tombs of Imam AL-Hussein and Imam AL-Abbas, the sons of Imam Ali bin Abi Talib. The elegance and originality of Arab-Islamic architecture are well evident in AL-Abassiya shrine. In every corner of the shrine, there are some magnificent artistic decorations.

 

 
 
AL-Askariya Shrine in Samarra

The visitor to Samarra', which was for some time the capital of the Abbasid State, will be amazed by the majesty of its ancient ruins and sacred sites, especially that of AL-Askariya Shrine whose golden dome dazzles the eye. With a circumference of 68 meters wide and more than 72.000 golden pieces it is one of the biggest domes in the Islamic world. Each one of its two golden minarets is 36 meters high. AL- Askariya Shrine embraces the tombs of Imam Ali AL-Hadi who died in 868 A.D. (254 A.H.) and his son AL-Hasan AL-Askari who died in 874 A.D. (260 A.H.) and was buried next to his father
 
AL-Qadiriya Shrine in Baghdad
Still in Baghdad, the city of history, literature and culture, there is another prestigious Islamic site. It is AL-Qadiriya shrine which is situated in AL- Rusafa, at a quarter known as Bab AL-Sheikh Abdul Qadir AL-Gailani, the Sheikh of Islam and the head of the Islamic scholars. History tells that AL-Qadiriya Shrine was originally a religious school. It was built by the Hanbali scholar Sheikh AL-Mubarak bin Ali bin AL- Hussein Abu Sa'eed (died 1119 A.D.- 513 A.H.). He was a scholar and a pious man of religion. The mausoleum and the Mosque of Sheikh Abdul Qadir AL-Gailani saw various construction phases. The most important of which took place in 1534 A.D.(941 A.H.) when a huge and wonderful dome was constructed over the indoor praying section of the mosque. It is the biggest ever dome in Iraq to be built of bricks and gypsum, and it exists up to this date.
 
AL-Kadimiya Shrine in Baghdad

Entering the holy AL-Kadimiya Shrine, one is overwhelmed by a feeling of majesty and amazement, as soon as one sees the galleries and cloisters. These galleries are decorated by ceramic tiles with their geometric engravings and Koranic verses. The Mosque and the Mausoleum of AL-Imam AL-A'dham
Any visitor to Baghdad would certainly head towards the mosque and Mausoleum of AL-Imam AL- A'dham, a famous and holy Islamic place of worship which has been dear to the hearts of Moslems. The district in which this holy site is situated was a famous part of Baghdad during the Abbasid era. It contains a cemetery known as AL- Khaizaran cemetery. When AL- Nu'man bin Thabit AL-Kufi died in 767 A.D (150 A.H.), he was buried in this cemetery and the district became to be known as the district of Abu Hanifa and AL-A'dhamiya
 
AL-Kufa Mosque

Kufa, one of the most important cities in the Islamic world, was built by the Moslems in the early years of the Islamic conquest. It was built by the Arab leader Sa'ad bin Abi Waqqas in 638 A.D. (17 A.H.). The historical importance of Kufa lies in the fact that it was taken as the capital of the Islamic state by Imam Ali bin Abi Talib in 657 A.D. (36 A.H.). There are many corridors in Kufa Mosque. It also contains the tombs of many pious men of religion, the pulpit of Imam Ali bin Abi Talib and the place where he met martyrdom when he was performing his morning prayer.
 
The Mausoleum of Sayyid Mohammed in Balad

This is one of the religious sites, which occupy a special position in the hearts, and the minds of the people. The visit to this mausoleum is usually accompanied by certain popular and religious rites. The mausoleum, 80 Km north of Baghdad, embraces the tomb of Sayyid Mohammad, son of Imam Ali AL-Jawad son of Ali son of Musa son of Ja'far, who died in 866 A.D.(252 A.H.).
 
Mosque of profit Yunis
It is situated at Nineveh area at the left bank of Tigris, opposite to the ancient city of Mousul. It is on the top of an ancient Assyrian archeological site beside the monastery of Younan son of Amitai (Jonah). He is known to the Mouslems as prophet Yunis or Thul noun as it is mentioned in holy Qura'n. On the other hand, the mosque of prophet Jonah is an old one, which believed to be the burial place of Jonah. It was built on one of the mounds that rise over the ruins of Ninveh The Mosque of Prophet Jirjies (Georges) It is one of the important mosques in Mousul. It embraces the tomb of prophet Jirjies which is built of marble with beautiful reliefs. The mosque is situated in Suq AL- She'areen district in Mousul and in street known by the same name. It is one of the ancient mosques which was mentioned by the explorer Ibin Jubair in the 12th century A.D.(6th century A.H.). It is believed also that it embraces the tomb of AL- Hur bin Yuosif.
 
AL-Auzair tomb
This tomb is situated in Missan Province. Its architect and ornaments which appear on the walls of the tomb indicate that its construction was contemporary to the construction of the tomb of AL-Kifil, that is, after Atatiky age at the 6th century B.C.
 
The AL Kifil minaret
The tomb of prophet Hizkael who is known Thi AL Kifil is situated in AL Kifil city which is in the way between Hilla and Kufa. There is a dispute with reference to the exact date of the construction of the coned dome, which was established at the top of the tomb. Some historians assume that it was established at 716 A.H, others think that the outer dome was constructed at the 6th century A.H, whereas the inner dome was constructed at the 8th century A.H. However, there is a third opinion that the rounded inner dome and the coned outer dome were constructed at the 8th century A.H and they based on a square base, which consists of ten classes. From the outside, the body of the minaret seems to be parted into various types and decorated with architectural, planted and written ornaments. These ornaments are of various forms; they have the form of a diamond with square fillers, which are hidden, prominent or have the form of flowers with several papers. In addition of that, there are prominent ornamented written texts.
